How to Write Expected Salary on a CV in the UAE (Basic vs Package)

How to write expected salary on a UAE CV: label basic wage and the total package, use a monthly dirham figure, and leave the number off unless a form asks. AED X,XXX is a blank format, not a market rate. Not legal advice.

How to write expected salary in a CV, for a UAE job, is a labeling problem before it is a number problem. I am Salman Ahmed, an AI specialist based in Dubai. I built CVPage AI. I am not a recruiter, a payroll officer, or a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. CVPage is not affiliated with MoHRE. The pages below do not print a market salary, so this note will not invent one. Where a figure appears, it is a blank format, written as AED X,XXX, so you can see where the words basic and package go.

Article 1 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 defines basic wage as the wage stipulated in the employment contract, paid for the work, on a monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, or piecework basis, and it does not include any other allowances or benefits in-kind. I read that definition in the English text of the decree.

The same article defines wage as the basic wage plus the cash allowances and benefits in-kind allocated to the worker under the contract or the decree. That wider figure can include a cost-of-living allowance, a benefit in kind, or the cash equivalent of a benefit when the contract or the by-laws allocate it as part of the wage. Housing and transport are the allowances people usually mean. They sit in this wider wage when the contract lists them. They do not sit inside basic wage.

How do you write expected salary on a CV in the UAE?

Write it only when someone asked. Use one monthly line, in dirhams, and say whether the figure is basic wage or the total package. A bare number is how a reader turns your housing allowance into basic wage, or the other way around. The two words are not style. They are the split in Article 1.

If the advert is silent, leave the line off the CV. Article 22 says the amount or type of the wage is specified in the employment contract. If the contract does not specify it, the competent court specifies it as a labour dispute. A hope typed under your phone number is not that contract. The signed offer is the paper MoHRE's process attaches to a work-permit application. Put the number on the form that asked for it, or in one sentence of a cover letter when the advert demanded a figure. Do not open the CV summary with it.

What is basic salary versus the total package?

Basic wage is the contract figure that excludes other allowances and benefits in-kind. The package, in ordinary hiring speech, is that basic wage plus the allowances the offer actually names. Housing allowance and transport allowance are the usual pair. A phone allowance, a ticket, or school fees can be in the same conversation. I am not going to tell you which of those your employer must pay. The decree puts an allowance into the wage when the contract or the by-laws allocate it. If the offer does not name it, do not type it onto the CV as if it were included.

People collapse the two into one unlabeled total because a job board has a single box. That box is the board's problem. Your line can still say which number you mean. Overtime in Article 19 is calculated on basic wage. End-of-service gratuity in Article 51 is also calculated on basic wage. A package figure hides the number those clauses use. This page does not run either sum. The overtime note and the gratuity note do, and they leave allowances out.

  • Basic: the contract wage for the work, with other allowances left out.
  • Package: basic plus the allowances the offer names, such as housing or transport, when they are written as allowances.
  • One unlabeled total: say that the offer does not split basic from allowances. Do not stamp the word basic on a combined figure.
  • Current and expected are different sentences. Do not average them into one polite number.

Should housing and transport go inside the basic figure?

No, not if the contract lists them as allowances. Article 1 keeps other allowances and benefits in-kind out of basic wage. A cost-of-living allowance can still be part of the wider wage. Housing and transport are that kind of allowance when the offer says so. Write them on their own, beside basic, or leave them off until the offer names them.

A company that quotes one number called total salary, and never shows basic, has not given you a split to invent. Write the one number and say the offer does not separate basic wage. Do not back-calculate a basic figure because a forum post said housing is usually a percentage. I have not used a percentage. None of the pages cited here prints one.

Why do UAE applications use a monthly AED figure?

Article 22 says salaries are paid in UAE dirham, and may be paid in another currency if both sides agree to that in the employment contract. The amount or type of wage belongs in the contract. The article also says the employer pays salaries or wages on their due dates, under the rules the Ministry approves.

The UAE government portal's wages page, which I read on 22 October 2026, says the page was updated on 14 October 2026. It says establishments registered with MoHRE must pay wages on the due date through the Wage Protection System. In the portal's account of Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026, salaries for the previous month are due on the first day of each Gregorian month, and the employer must transfer at least 85 percent of the total wages due on time where lawful deductions apply. Payment can be in Emirati dirham, or in another currency if the contract agrees. The portal also says the system was developed by the UAE Central Bank so MoHRE can see whether private-sector wages are paid in full and on time.

That is why a monthly dirham line matches the papers a private-sector employer already files. It is not a CV fashion rule I am adding. Basic wage in Article 1 can also be weekly, daily, hourly, or piecework. If your contract is one of those, say so, and do not quietly turn a daily rate into a month. If the contract is monthly, write per month. An annual figure makes the reader divide. The due date on the portal page is monthly for the wages it describes. Skip the annual number unless the form's own box asks for a year.

The 85 percent line is about what the employer transfers against the wages that are due, after lawful deductions. It is not a tip to understate your expectation by 15 percent. It is also not a definition of basic wage. Total wages due, on that page, is the payroll fact. Basic wage, in Article 1, is the narrower contract fact. Label whichever one you were asked for.

Is there a minimum salary you should copy onto the CV?

Article 27 says the Cabinet may, on the Minister's proposal and in coordination with the concerned authorities, issue a resolution that sets the minimum wage for workers or for a category of them. The article does not print a dirham amount. I am not going to supply one.

The same wages page on the government portal says there is no minimum salary stipulated in the UAE Labour Law. It adds that the law includes general provisions requiring wages sufficient to meet the basic needs of employees. I am not pinning that sentence to an article number. Article 27, in the English text I read, authorises a future resolution. It does not itself state a floor, and it does not use the words basic needs.

So this guide has no salary to recommend, for a cashier, a store keeper, a fresher, or anyone else. Family-visa salary thresholds move, and they are a sponsorship question, not a line for the CV. If a form asks what you want, answer with your own figure, labeled, or say you will discuss it against the offer. Do not borrow a number from a blog that claims to know the Dubai average. I have not published an average, and I will not.

When should you leave expected salary off the CV?

  • The advert does not ask. The contract is where Article 22 puts the amount.
  • You only know a rumour about the band. A rumour is not an expectation you can defend.
  • You would be writing current and expected as the same figure so the gap looks small. Use the word you mean.
  • The number includes housing, a flight, and medical, and you cannot point to those lines in an offer. Leave the bundle off.
  • You are about to type a monthly cost you hope the employer will reimburse. The government portal says the employer pays the entry visa, the flight, the medical test, and the residence permit for an expatriate hired into the private sector. Do not offer to fund those on the CV.

Current salary, when a form asks, is a different answer. Put it on the form, labeled current, and split basic from allowances if you know the split from your own contract or pay slip. Do not paste a year of payslips into the CV file you email widely. A salary certificate, if a bank or a landlord needs one later, is the employer's letter. It is not a block on the CV.

Where does the figure go if the advert or the form asks?

Use the box they gave you. An application form beats the CV. A cover letter is the next place, and only when the advert demanded a figure. The letter guide on this site already says to keep that to one monthly sentence and to label expected or current. This page is the longer version of that sentence: say basic or package, and do not invent the allowances.

Format only. AED X,XXX is a blank, not a salary I am suggesting.
What you were askedWhat to writeWhere it goes
Nothing. The advert is silent.Omit the figure. Not on the CV.
Expected salary, and you know the basic.AED X,XXX basic per month. The form. One cover-letter sentence if the advert asked.
Expected package, and the offer names allowances.AED X,XXX basic per month, plus housing and transport as written in the offer. The same form. Do not fold the allowances into the basic figure.
One combined total, and the offer does not split it.AED X,XXX per month. Not labeled basic, because the offer does not show basic wage on its own.The form, with that note. Do not invent the split.

Replace every X with a digit from your own offer or your own expectation. If you do not have a digit, do not borrow mine, because I did not print one. Negotiable, on its own, is not an answer when they asked for a range you actually have. A range is allowed if both ends are yours and you still say whether each end is basic or package. AED X,XXX to AED Y,YYY basic per month is a format. It is not two salaries.

What mistakes do people make with a salary line?

  • Writing a package total and calling it basic, so housing looks like wage for overtime and gratuity.
  • Writing basic and quietly adding the allowances into the same figure.
  • Quoting an annual sum, or a daily rate, as if it were the monthly contract wage.
  • Copying a dirham amount from a forum, a family-visa post, or another person's CV.
  • Putting current salary, expected salary, and negotiable in one line.
  • Hiding the line in a text box or a table that a parser will scramble. If you must include it, use a plain sentence.

Common questions

Should I write expected salary on my CV for a UAE job?

Only when the advert or the form asks. Otherwise leave it off. Article 22 puts the amount in the employment contract. A CV line is not that contract.

Do I write basic salary or the full package?

Write the one they asked for, and label it. Basic wage excludes other allowances and benefits in-kind. Housing and transport stay outside basic when the contract lists them as allowances.

Is the figure monthly, and in dirhams?

For a monthly contract, yes: a monthly figure. Article 22 says pay is in UAE dirham unless the contract agrees another currency. The wages page describes WPS due dates by the month. Say so if your contract is daily, weekly, hourly, or piecework instead.

Can you tell me a normal Dubai salary to type?

No. Article 27 does not print a dirham minimum, and the government portal says the labour law does not stipulate one. AED X,XXX on this page is a blank format. CVPage is not MoHRE.
