How do you use ChatGPT to update a resume?
Paste the CV you already have, not a blank prompt that says write me a resume. Add one job ad if you are aiming at a role. Then tell the model what it is forbidden to invent. The update is an edit of your file. A fresh biography is how the dates drift and the tools multiply.
These prompts are examples you can paste. I did not run them through a named company's ATS, and I did not score them with a detector.
What prompt keeps the facts true?
Use something this direct:
You are editing my existing resume. Keep every employer, job title, date, and number exactly as written. Do not add a metric, a tool, a certification, or a responsibility that is not already in the text. Rewrite only lines that are vague. Prefer a shorter line. If a line is already specific, leave it. Return the full resume and a short list of lines you changed.
If the model still upgrades a title or inserts a percentage, delete that line. The prompt is an instruction, not a guarantee. Read the diff.
How do you avoid robotic phrasing in the same prompt?
Add a second rule under the first:
Do not use these words: spearheaded, leveraged, robust, cutting-edge, passionate, results-driven, proven track record, cross-functional synergies, furthermore, additionally. Do not make every bullet the same length. Write the way a colleague would describe the work in Slack.
Then give it one real detail the old bullet missed, in your own words, such as the name of the queue, the team size, or the thing that kept breaking. Without that detail the model can only average other resumes. That average is the robotic sound people are trying to remove.
Can ChatGPT rewrite a resume for a new job?
Yes, as a wording pass against one ad, if you add this:
Here is one job description. You may reuse a term from it only when my resume already shows that work. List any term you wanted to add but could not support. Do not paste the ad into a skills list.
The unsupported list is the useful part. It shows the gap without stuffing the file. Matching keywords is explained on the ATS checker page, and scrambled layouts are a different problem on the parser test. The ATS hub collects both.
What is the then-check-it step?
Do not submit the chat output. Paste it into the ChatGPT resume fix. That page uses the same line check as the homepage and shows phrases that still read as template language, with a plainer replacement. It does not generate a third version of your career. If you want the flags without the replacement, use the AI resume detector and remember it cannot prove who wrote the file.
The humanizer is the hub for this topic. It is not a second how-to. The longer checklist, with before-and-after lines, is how to make a resume not sound like AI. Surveys about rejection, kept separate from each other, are in do companies reject AI-generated resumes.
What should you fix by hand after the model replies?
Read every changed line and ask what you would say if someone stopped you. If the answer needs a number you do not have, delete the number. If the verb is one you would not say, swap it. If two jobs now share a sentence, the model averaged them. Put the specific tool back on the job where you used it.
Keep a copy of the file you started with. Chat transcripts are easy to lose, and a later prompt can overwrite a date. I will not claim a prompt makes a resume safe, human, or likely to be hired. It only keeps the edit smaller.

How should you run the prompts?
Paste the old CV and one job ad under a prompt that says to keep every job, date, and number. Ask for a rewrite of the vague lines only. When the reply comes back, compare it to the original before you replace anything. A new employer, a new tool, or a round percentage is a delete, not an edit.
Then use the ChatGPT resume fix page on the draft. That box lists template phrases and a plainer replacement. It does not prove you used a model, and it does not hide that you did. The humanizer page explains the same limit in more detail.
One prompt at a time is enough. A second full regeneration usually adds another layer of the same polish. Stop when the line sounds like something you would say in the interview.
