How do you make a resume not sound like AI?
Read the summary out loud. If it could sit on a stranger's CV after you swap the job title, it is the problem. Replace it with the role, the domain, and one scope marker you can point at. Then do the same to the first three bullets under the current job. The rest of the file matters less on a first skim.
The before-and-after lines below are composites I wrote as patterns. They are not a client's CV, and they are not a test result.
Before: Results-driven professional with a proven track record of leveraging cross-functional collaboration to drive impactful outcomes. After: Backend engineer, four years on billing APIs. Last role owned the invoice retry job and the on-call rotation for that service.
Before: Spearheaded innovative initiatives to optimize operational efficiency and enhance stakeholder engagement. After: Rebuilt the nightly ETL in Airflow after the cron job started failing past 200k rows.
Before: Passionate about delivering exceptional customer experiences in a fast-paced environment. After: Handled tier-two billing tickets and wrote the five refund cases the new hires kept asking about.
Notice what stayed out. No new percentage. No new employer. The second line only works if the Airflow job is real. If it is not your work, do not borrow it.
What should the checklist catch?
Read the summary and circle every adjective. Passionate, dynamic, results-oriented, and innovative rarely earn their place. If the sentence still makes sense without them, delete them.
Check that the bullets do not share one shape. Ten lines that all run verb, adjective, noun, outcome were usually generated or heavily templated. Vary them. One line can start with the constraint. One can name the tool. One can be shorter than the others.
Delete essay glue. Furthermore, Additionally, and Moreover do not belong between resume bullets. Each line should stand alone.
Hunt for fake metrics. Significant impact, measurable results, and a substantial improvement are number-shaped holes. Either write the number you can defend or delete the claim.
Match the resume to the public profile. If the CV sounds senior and the LinkedIn sounds plain, trust the plainer version. Dates and titles that disagree are a bigger problem than a buzzword.
Stop when a line is already specific. Rewriting a plain bullet into grander language is how a human file starts to sound like a model. The same standard, written as a longer edit, is how to sound more credible on a resume.
Where do you check the draft after the edit?
Paste the file into the AI resume detector. It lists lines that still read as template language and says why. It is a writing-pattern check, not proof of who typed the words. Then open the humanizer if you want those weak lines shortened without a full regeneration. Full regeneration is what makes the second draft sound like the first one.
If you are editing inside ChatGPT, use the prompt guide so the model is told to keep jobs, dates, and numbers. After that, the ChatGPT resume fix is the check, not another prompt. The AI resume hub holds the related notes, including whether companies reject AI-generated resumes. Keyword overlap with a job ad is a separate job. That lives on the ATS hub, after the wording sounds like you.
What does remove AI from a resume not mean?
It does not mean hiding that you used a writing tool. It does not mean a detector score of zero. It means a reader can ask about the line and you can answer without a script. One awkward true sentence beats five polished lines you cannot explain. I have not published a rate for how often a humanized file passes a named detector, and I will not invent one.
