Should You Put a Photo on Your CV in Dubai?

Short answer: no UAE rule requires a photo on your CV, and Dubai employers differ. When a headshot helps, when to leave it off, what a usable photo looks like, and why it is not a visa photo.

CVPage is an independent free help site, not affiliated with MOHRE, ICP, GDRFA or any UAE government body. This is general guidance, not legal advice. Confirm with MOHRE or your employer before acting.

People ask this because the advice conflicts. One friend says Dubai always wants a photo. A multinational careers page says never. Both can be true for different employers. There is no line in the federal labour-law material on the UAE government portal that says a private-sector CV must carry a portrait. The choice is a hiring habit, and the habit is mixed.

GulfTalent's Dubai jobs guide says most companies in Dubai prefer a photo, that multinational and senior roles use one less often, and that customer-facing jobs treat it as critical. That is a publisher's description of the market, not a MoHRE rule.

Should you put a photo on your CV in Dubai?

Add a small headshot when the advert asks for one, or when the job is customer-facing: hospitality, cabin crew, front desk, luxury retail, real estate sales, or similar. Leave it off when you are applying to a multinational that uses a standard ATS, when the advert says not to include one, or when you have no decent photograph. A missing photo is easier to forgive than a selfie, a group crop, or a passport scan pasted into the margin.

If you are unsure, look at the advert first and the company second. A local family business and a global bank do not screen the same way. When the advert is silent and the role is not customer-facing, I would leave the photo off and put the same professional portrait on LinkedIn, where the reader can open it if they want.

Is a CV photo the same as a visa photo?

No. The employment file the employer builds with MoHRE uses identity documents, including your passport. That process is not the same as decorating a CV. A white-background passport photograph can be the right file for a visa application and the wrong image to drop into a resume, because it looks like an ID scan and often breaks the layout.

An employer bringing someone in for private-sector work starts with a signed offer and a MoHRE work permit. The portal describes that document path separately from anything a CV template might call a photo.

Michael Page Middle East warns against heavy graphics because software and people both skim on a screen. A full-width banner with your face inside the image is a graphic. If you include a portrait, keep it small and keep your name, phone, and email as real text beside it.

What does a usable headshot look like?

  • Face and shoulders, plain background, clothes you would wear to that office.
  • Recent. A photo from six years ago creates a mismatch at the interview.
  • Even light. No filters, no sunglasses, no holiday backdrop.
  • The same portrait you use on LinkedIn, so the two profiles match.
  • A file small enough that the PDF stays under a couple of megabytes.

Where should the photo sit?

Top corner of the first page, next to the name. Do not repeat it on page two. Do not wrap text around it in a way that a parser reads your phone number as part of the picture. If the only way your template can show a photo is to turn the header into an image, drop the photo.

What should you not send?

  • A cropped wedding photo or a gym photo.
  • A scan of the passport bio page. That exposes an identity document.
  • Several photos to show range. One is the maximum.
  • A photo instead of a visa line. The portrait does not say whether you can be hired.

Does Abu Dhabi differ from Dubai?

I have not found a rule that splits the two emirates on CV photos. The same mixed habit shows up across the UAE: local and customer-facing employers ask more often, international employers ask less. Follow the advert in either city.

How does this sit next to the rest of the CV?

A photo will not rescue a missing visa line or a summary that could describe anyone. If you have room for only one personal element, write nationality, visa route, and notice. Add the photo only after those lines are honest. The format guide shows a header you can copy as a pattern.

What if the company is outside the UAE but the job is in Dubai?

Use the standard of the team that will read the file. A European headquarters often strips photos for bias reasons even when the seat is in Dubai. If the recruiter is a regional agency, GulfTalent's description of local preference is the closer guide. When two readers will see the CV, make two files: one with the headshot, one without. Do not change the facts between them.

Can the resume checker add or remove a photo?

No. CVPage AI reads text. It can flag a vague summary. It cannot judge a portrait, and it should not be asked to invent personal details around one.

Common questions

Is it illegal to put a photo on a CV in the UAE?

I have not found a federal labour rule that bans it or requires it for private-sector CVs. Follow the advert, and do not send an identity-document scan.

Should women omit the photo?

Use the same test as anyone else: advert, customer-facing role, and photo quality. Do not use a more revealing picture because a forum said it helps. GulfTalent's guide specifically warns against that.

What if my LinkedIn photo is better than my CV photo?

Use that portrait in both places, or leave the CV without one and link the profile.

Do Saudi applications follow the Dubai habit?

Treat them as their own market. The Iqama guide covers the KSA lines that matter more than a portrait.
